@ marginal-style: Miata cooling system is definitely wrong as it has been studied for a FWD and adapted to a RWD. As a result, you have a non-optimal water circulation.
If you live in a north-european country and you are not track-addicted, you will never feel how necessary is on a Miata.

Especially on track or on high-speed mountain driving it's very easy to have your coolant temperature increasing suddently and causing a lot of problem (for instance head gasket). There are several solutions developed around the world, the one from Phreno is the most "DIY one". IMHO it's a good deal as he solved a big problem spending just a few euro.

By the way, the aim of his car is mainly hard driving & trackdays, otherwise it's absolutely not necessary!
